The growing availability of video content on YouTube will reformat approaches to dental education, however the absence of an expert verification system raises questions about the reliability of this source. A new study showed that video materials on dental photography on YouTube demonstrate a low level of quality and credibility, which requires a cautious approach when using them as an additional learning resource.
Methodology and research results
The authors analyzed 113 English-language videos, applying three standardized tools for assessing the quality and reliability of online information. The results raise concerns: all three methods revealed substantial deficits in the educational value of the content. Researchers noted a systematic absence of authorship data, references to sources, and information about the relevance of the material.
Significantly, the study did not evaluate the correctness of the photography techniques themselves in accordance with dental protocols, which determines the specificity of the conclusions obtained and indicates the need for additional verification of the technical component of educational content.
Differentiation of video content by publication sources
Video materials uploaded by practicing dentists and clinicians received significantly higher ratings compared to content from medical organizations and websites. Materials from academic institutions also showed relatively good results, however comprised only nine videos from the analyzed sample.
The study revealed a positive correlation between content quality and metrics of views, likes, and the level of audience engagement. At the same time, the authors emphasized that the popularity of videos is explained not only by the quality of the material, which indicates a discrepancy between the view rating and the educational value of the content.
Practical conclusions for clinical practice
For clinicians and students, the conclusion is unambiguous: YouTube can serve only as an additional source of learning and cannot replace structured, evidence-based training. This is consistent with previous research in dental education, which revealed insufficient quality of video content on pediatric dentistry and other clinical disciplines.
The authors insist on the need for dental specialists and educational institutions to develop more structured, well-referenced and current online educational content that would comply with international standards for the quality of medical information and could serve as a reliable tool for continuing professional development.
