In the context of healthcare system transformation and growing attention to oral disease prevention, the key role of dental hygienists is becoming increasingly evident. Despite their significant contribution to public health, the professional status of hygienists often remains underappreciated, both by the general public and at the level of institutional recognition. It is precisely this gap that the new national Oral Health Awareness Project aims to bridge, uniting specialists to protect and advance the profession of dental hygienist as an integral part of the healthcare system.
The Oral Health Awareness Project was established with the goal of consolidating licensed and accredited dental hygienists across the country to launch a large-scale public awareness campaign. Its key objective is to achieve recognition of dental hygienists as essential healthcare professionals.
As part of its mission, the organization aims to raise public awareness about the rigorous educational and professional requirements necessary to obtain a dental hygienist license. Special emphasis is placed on explaining the critically important role hygienists play in providing preventive and often life-saving care to patients. Concurrently, the project focuses on empowering the specialists themselves, offering them tools and resources for active advocacy of the profession at the level of local communities and professional organizations. Another important area of activity is collaboration with public health institutions to implement educational programs aimed at improving both oral and general population health.
The Executive Director of the Oral Health Awareness Project is Lysandra Maisonet, RDH, BS, PHDHP, EFDA — a professional with extensive clinical and academic experience. Financial management of the organization is overseen by Donnella Miller, RDH, BS, MPS, who serves as Treasurer.
To date, the project has succeeded in building an active professional community: the organization’s group on the social network Facebook has nearly 6,000 members, indicating a high level of engagement and the relevance of the issues raised for dental hygienists nationwide.
To achieve its goals, the project relies on a one-time membership fee model with differentiated participation levels. This approach allows supporters to directly fund key initiatives aimed at protecting and advancing the profession.
The funds raised are planned to be allocated toward engaging a professional PR agency specializing in healthcare, which will ensure competent and effective representation of dental hygienists’ interests in the public sphere. Additionally, financing will be used to cover accounting and legal services necessary for compliance with the requirements of a 501(c)(4) nonprofit status. Separate attention is given to operational expenses, enabling the project to function stably and consistently.
A fundamental principle of the Oral Health Awareness Project is full transparency: none of the initiative’s participants or leaders receive compensation, and 100% of all contributions are directed solely toward implementing the campaign and achieving its stated goals.
The Oral Health Awareness Project reflects a broader shift in understanding the role of preventive dentistry and an interdisciplinary approach to healthcare. By uniting the professional community and creating a sustainable platform for public dialogue, the project helps strengthen the status of dental hygienists as indispensable specialists who impact not only oral health but also the overall well-being of patients.
