Leadership of International Dental Manufacturers: a new strategy against regulatory barriers and counterfeit products

At the IDM General Assembly held during the FDI World Dental Congress in Prague, new priorities for the global dental industry were identified. They concern both the regulatory environment and combating counterfeit products.

New leadership of International Dental Manufacturers

International Dental Manufacturers (IDM) elected a new board of directors for the period 2026–2028. Olaf Sauerbier, Chief Executive Officer of German manufacturer VOCO and President of the Federation of European Dental Industry, assumed the position of President of the organization. He succeeded Samantha Chittham, who headed IDM since September 2024.

The new leadership team includes: Tim Long, Chief Commercial Officer of A-dec and Chairman of the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation, elected President-Elect; Yutaka Shinozaki, President of GC Corporation and Director of the Japanese Association of Dental Manufacturers, appointed Vice President.

Key challenges for the dental industry

Assembly members discussed critical issues facing manufacturers of dental equipment and materials. Growing diversity of regulatory requirements between regions increases costs, slows the development and implementation of innovations, and restricts product availability for practitioners and patients.

The second serious threat recognized is the expansion of counterfeit dental devices, which not only expose patients to significant risk of complications but also undermine the position of legitimate manufacturers in the market.

«As President of IDM, my priorities are clear: we must counter the growing regulatory pressure that hinders innovation and product availability, and take a firm stance against counterfeit products that threaten patient health. IDM will be the voice of the industry on both fronts», noted Olaf Sauerbier.

About the scope and activities of the organization

IDM represents the interests of approximately 1900 manufacturers and suppliers of dental materials and equipment in Europe, North America, Australia, Brazil, and Japan. The next General Assembly is scheduled for March 18, 2027 at the International Dental Exhibition in Cologne.
