One of the most dynamically evolving areas has been three-dimensional printing, which has gradually transitioned from the realm of science fiction and experimental prototyping into an everyday clinical tool. In dentistry, 3D printing has unlocked new possibilities for the rapid, precise, and cost-effective production of prosthetic and orthodontic devices directly within the clinical setting.

Today, the range of applications for additive technologies is constantly expanding: from night guards and bonding trays to permanent crowns and teeth for complete removable dentures. Modern 3D printers enable dentists not only to shorten treatment timelines but also to make many devices more accessible to patients by producing them “here and now,” without prolonged laboratory waiting times.

From science fiction to clinical reality

The ability to “ask a computer” to reproduce a physical object long remained an attribute of science fiction. However, like many other futuristic ideas—holograms, video communication, virtual reality — 3D printing has gradually transitioned from the realm of fantasy into the domain of proven practice.

The history of three-dimensional printing is relatively short: the technology was developed in the early 1980s and was initially intended for the rapid production of plastic prototypes in the automotive and aerospace industries. It soon became evident that additive manufacturing held significant potential in medicine as well, including dentistry.

In the early stages, the key limitation for dental applications remained the capabilities of computer modeling and obtaining precise data. The situation fundamentally changed in the 2000s with the advent of intraoral laser scanners, which eliminated the barrier between clinical reality and digital models, paving the way for the widespread adoption of CAD/CAM technologies and 3D printing.

Evolution of equipment and materials: from laboratories to the patient’s chair

Early dental 3D printers were bulky, slow, and used primarily in dental laboratories. The available materials were suitable only for extraoral models and casting patterns. However, as the equipment became more compact, faster, more precise, and more affordable, the focus shifted toward clinical application directly within the dental office.

A pivotal role in this process has been played by the development of biocompatible photopolymer resins. Modern materials enable the fabrication of not only diagnostic models but also therapeutic devices. The introduction of FDA-approved polishable micro-hybrid hybrid resins marked an important milestone: they are suitable for creating permanent indirect restorations and complete removable dentures. This has significantly shortened production times and reduced the cost of devices that traditionally required complex laboratory manufacturing.

Today, a 3D printer can, based on a digital scan of a patient’s dental arches, produce a model, tray, or crown within minutes rather than weeks, with material costs amounting to just a few dollars per item. This saves time and resources for both the doctor and the patient.

Productivity and clinical efficacy of dental 3D printers

Printing resins are compatible with a wide range of 3D printers from various manufacturers; however, the highest efficiency is achieved in systems where the equipment and materials were initially developed as an integrated complex.

Thus, SprintRay Pro S DLP printers, combined with the proprietary line of resins, ensure high precision in producing individual restorations and allow for simultaneous printing of a large number of models for orthodontic purposes. The SprintRay Pro95 S model, equipped with a large build platform, is suitable for printing full arches, surgical guides, trays, prostheses, and other devices. Using the Die and Model 2 resin enables the production of up to eight full-arch models in just 15 minutes and up to 22 models in less than an hour, with a unit cost of less than two dollars.

Night guards printed from NightGuard Flex can be ready in less than an hour and cost approximately three dollars, making them more accessible to patients and increasing treatment adherence.

Particular attention should be given to the nanoceramic hybrid resin SprintRay OnX — the first radiopaque restorative resin for 3D printing. Its optical properties, including translucency and opacity, closely mimic natural tooth tissues, making the material optimal for fabricating teeth in hybrid dentures.

Integrated systems and digital ecosystems

The company Dentsply Sirona offers the comprehensive Primeprint solution — a fully automated medical 3D printing system integrated into the DS Core digital ecosystem. This platform ensures seamless operation with existing digital protocols, including CEREC and inLab, and allows dental clinics and laboratories to expand their range of services.

Intelligent material management, RFID tagging, contactless processing, and automated washing and polymerization processes enhance safety, reproducibility, and productivity. The ability to receive CAD files from dental laboratories via the cloud platform further expands the clinical and organizational capabilities of a practice.

Photopolymer resins and clinical indications

The modern market offers a wide range of specialized resins for specific dental tasks: orthodontic models, surgical guides, splints, night guards, bonding trays, temporary and permanent crowns.

The VOCO V-Print product line, for example, includes materials for printing trays, surgical guides, splints, trial dentures, and casting patterns. Each material is tailored to functional requirements: some are optimized for high printing speed, others for maximum precision, biocompatibility, and patient comfort.

Keystone KeyPrint products also demonstrate a high degree of specialization, offering resins for diagnostic, orthodontic, and accelerated printing processes, as well as rigid and soft splints, which differ in mechanical properties and clinical indications.

Completion of the digital workflow

Milling machines have long moved the production of indirect restorations from laboratories into dental offices; however, they are limited to working with rigid materials. 3D printing fills this gap, enabling the fabrication of more flexible and adaptive structures with minimal material waste.

Thus, additive technologies are becoming a logical and essential element of the modern chairside CAD/CAM process. And although today’s 3D printers do not yet respond to voice commands, the pace of technological development suggests that this is only a matter of time.

Conclusion: prospects and significance for clinical practice

3D printing in dentistry has already ceased to be an experimental technology. It has transformed into a strategic tool that enhances the efficiency, precision, and economic sustainability of clinical practice. The development of photopolymer resins, integrated digital systems, and automated workflows is positioning additive manufacturing as one of the key drivers in the continued evolution of dentistry, which is oriented toward patient-centric care, quality, and speed of service delivery.

The development of digital technologies in healthcare over recent decades has radically transformed approaches to diagnosis, planning, and treatment.
