Professor of Dentistry and Chief of the Division of Regenerative Sciences and Periodontology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC Health). He took up the position in July 2023.

After completing his DDS degree in Taiwan (1986) and his doctorate along with a certificate in periodontology from SUNY Buffalo (1997), Chien returned to his homeland, where he taught at China Medical University and served as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry since 2001. In 2007, he moved to the United States and became a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Dentistry at Ohio State University (OSU) and since 2009 as Director of the Predoctoral Program in Periodontology. During the same period, he received the status of a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Chien's research interests focus on implantology, directed surgery, and tissue regeneration. He conducts clinical and laboratory studies on implant stability, immediate implant placement techniques, platform switching, bone and soft tissue regeneration, as well as risk assessment and protocols in guided surgery. His scientific legacy includes more than 38 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as participation in the editorial boards of leading international journals.
