As oral health becomes increasingly integrated into national and international public health strategies, the role of comparable, practice-oriented data is growing. Effective prevention, resource planning, and clinical guideline development are now impossible without systematic analysis of the actual state of the population’s dental health.
Against this backdrop, the Oral Health Observatory (OHO) project, initiated by the World Dental Federation (FDI), attracts particular attention. In an interview with Dental Tribune International, Dr. Liu Yi — Director of International Communications at the Chinese Dental Association and Clinical Professor at the School of Stomatology, Peking University — shared insights on China’s participation in this global project and emphasized its significance for advancing evidence-based dentistry and reducing inequalities in access to care.
China’s motivation for participation and alignment with national priorities
The Chinese Dental Association, as an active member of the FDI, viewed the OHO project from the outset as a unique opportunity for international data benchmarking. According to Dr. Liu, comparative analysis allows for the identification of systemic differences in oral health status between countries, learning from others’ experiences, and developing more effective prevention strategies.
The project holds particular value in the context of the global goal — reducing the gap in dental health and moving toward universal access to dental care. Complementing national studies: the unique value of clinical data
China possesses a large-scale epidemiological monitoring system: the fifth national epidemiological program on oral health has recently been completed, covering over 170,000 children and adults. However, as Dr. Liu notes, such population-based studies do not reflect the dynamics of patients who actively seek dental care.
This is where the OHO plays a complementary role, providing real-time clinical data collected directly from dental facilities. This enables the analysis not only of disease prevalence but also of behavioral factors, treatment-seeking pathways, and clinical outcomes.
A significant technological advantage of the project is the OHO digital platform — a mobile application developed by the FDI team. Patients complete questionnaires on smartphones or tablets, which simplifies data collection, increases engagement, and allows for tailoring tools to local specifics. Key observations: patient behavior and clinical correlations
According to the Chinese side, participation in the OHO has already yielded significant analytical results. The project has demonstrated a new, more flexible format for clinical data collection and laid the groundwork for subsequent research.
The analysis revealed consistent behavioral patterns. Patients who brush their teeth less than twice a day, smoke, or consume alcohol show more pronounced signs of gum disease. Similarly, inadequate hygiene combined with high sugar consumption correlates with increased caries prevalence. These habits, especially when combined with alcohol consumption, adversely affect quality of life.
An additional observation is that a significant portion of Chinese patients seek dental care only when symptoms arise, rather than for preventive purposes. This underscores the need to strengthen prevention programs and health education efforts. The obtained data also reaffirm the well-known yet still relevant connection between oral health and systemic health, reinforcing the arguments in favor of integrated healthcare models.
OHO’s impact on policy and clinical practice
From a strategic development perspective, the OHO project aligns seamlessly with World Health Organization initiatives to integrate oral health into broader programs targeting non-communicable diseases. For China, where conducting national surveys requires significant financial and human resources, the OHO digital model presents a potentially more economical and flexible monitoring tool.
According to Dr. Liu, in the long term, OHO data could be integrated into broader healthcare information systems that encompass other chronic diseases. This would enable the acquisition of up-to-date data in near real-time and facilitate its use for developing more precise and sustainable prevention programs, improving clinical practice, and making evidence-based management decisions.
