Giovanni Zucchelli

An outstanding specialist in the field of periodontology and implantology, whose innovative soft tissue plastic surgery techniques have transformed modern dentistry. After graduating from the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Bologna in 1988, he received his PhD in Medical Biotechnology in 1999. Since 2000, he has been Professor of Periodontology and Implantology at the University of Bologna, Head of the Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene. In 2020-2022, he served as President of the Italian Academy of Osseointegration (IAO). His international recognition is confirmed by his honorary membership in the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and his active work in the European Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (EAED), the Italian Society of Periodontology (SIdP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP).

His book Mucogingival Esthetic Surgery (Quintessence, 2013), translated into 12 languages, has become a worldwide bestseller and the standard for the treatment of gum recession. His research and clinical publications include the article "Esthetic Treatment of Peri-Implant Soft Tissue Defects" (International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, 2013), as well as work on the use of coronally displaced flap (CAF) in combination with biological materials, including Straumann® Emdogain®. His developments have made a key contribution to the predicted coverage of gingival recessions and the aesthetics of the soft tissues around implants.
