Artificial Intelligence in Dental Education: Integration Strategy and Transformation of Pedagogical Readiness

Artificial intelligence is redefining the landscape of dental education — from teaching methodologies for students to faculty retraining and professional readiness of graduates. A recently published review by researchers from Ajman University systematizes strategies for successful AI integration in healthcare with particular emphasis on dentistry, formulating recommendations on institutional preparation, workforce development, and ethical governance.

Expanding Role of AI in Dental Education

A literature analysis (2015–2025) revealed significant expansion in AI applications in dental education. Intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive platforms, virtual patients, and simulation-based trainers enable learners to enhance diagnostic reasoning, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making skills in a controlled environment. AI-generated feedback facilitates identification of knowledge gaps and improvement of clinical competence at the preclinical stage, ensuring higher levels of student preparedness for independent clinical practice.

Role of Educators and Their Professional Development

However, the success of AI implementation in the educational process directly depends on educator competence. The authors emphasize the necessity for continuous professional development of dental educators through specialized workshops and micro-credentials (short-term modules), aimed at fostering digital literacy and confidence in applying AI in teaching and knowledge assessment. This approach ensures that educators can effectively integrate new technologies into the learning process and adequately evaluate their impact on educational quality.

Institutional Requirements and Infrastructure

At the institutional level, development of transparent normative-ethical frameworks, academic integrity policies, and investment in digital infrastructure, simulation tools, and data protection systems is required. Such comprehensive institutional preparation ensures a systematic approach to AI technology implementation and guarantees its safe and responsible use for educational purposes.

Critical Challenges in AI Integration

The review highlights a number of critical challenges requiring special attention: algorithmic bias, privacy violations, unequal access to technologies, and the risk of excessive dependence on AI tools. The latter danger is particularly significant for dental education — excessive student reliance on AI systems may weaken the development of critical thinking and learner independence, which is inadmissible for forming a competent clinician.

Assessment Mechanisms and Preservation of Clinical Judgment

The researchers recommend designing assessment mechanisms in such a way as to guarantee preservation of student clinical judgment when working with AI systems. Human oversight and professional evaluation must remain the cornerstone of higher dental education, ensuring that graduates can critically analyze recommendations generated by AI tools and make independent, substantiated clinical decisions in the interests of patients.

Integrated Approach to Successful AI Implementation

The authors conclude that integration of AI in dental education is possible only through collaboration among educators, clinicians, institutional leaders, and policymakers. Investments in educator retraining, curriculum reform, and robust governance will enable graduates to provide safe, ethical, and patient-centered care, applying digital tools critically and responsibly in everyday clinical practice.
