Dentalcorp Fund at the University of Montreal: 1 million dollars and a contribution to the formation of an entrepreneurial educational ecosystem

Global trends in dentistry require coordinated efforts to integrate clinical education and business competencies, forming a new professional paradigm.

In the current context the key factor of progress is not only academic mastery — systemic training in practice management and entrepreneurship is required; the initiative of the University of Montreal and Dentalcorp, expressed in the creation of the Dentalcorp Fund with a contribution of 1 million US dollars, is aimed at supporting entrepreneurial education, scholarships, research and clinical development. Renaming of the laboratory to Dentalcorp Student Laboratory and funding a summer school for fifth-year students demonstrate the aspiration to combine the educational and applied components of training young specialists.

Funding as a key factor

The Fund acts not only as a source of funds — it is positioned as an element of a strategy to integrate education and clinical practice, contributing to the implementation of interdisciplinary approaches and the translation of scientific data into everyday clinical activity. Funding of clinical research and applied projects increases the possibility of conducting prospective studies, evaluating clinical outcomes and implementing regenerative protocols based on validation of results.

Instruments and directions of support

Support implies targeted mechanisms — a summer entrepreneurial school for senior students, annual scholarships for doctoral students, funding of clinical trials and laboratory equipment; such measures formalize the transfer of skills in clinic management, financial management, commercialization of innovations and quality assessment of treatment outcomes. It is important that the allocation of funds takes into account the principles of scientific independence, transparency and methodological rigor to ensure the reliability of the obtained data.

Educational ecosystem: structure and content

The Fund’s goal is to create a reproducible model of training where standardization of curricula is combined with clinical validation and the implementation of digital technologies. Simulation practices, clinical rotations in partner clinics, integration of modules on quality management and legal aspects of practice form competencies in demand on the service market.

Mentorship and entrepreneurial education

The role of mentorship goes beyond the transfer of technical skills — mentors must facilitate the formation of strategic thinking, change management skills, assessment of the economic efficiency of clinical decisions; this requires inclusion in programs of elements of business planning, risk management, metric assessments of treatment effectiveness, PROMs and other patient outcome indicators.

Montreal as a strategic platform

The integration of the initiative into the Brave the Way campaign testifies to a systemic transformation of educational policy and strengthening of ties between academia and industry — already more than 160 graduates of the faculty of dentistry practice in the Dentalcorp network, which facilitates employment and scaling of best practices. Transnational diffusion of clinical protocols and management approaches through the partner network contributes to the accelerated adoption of innovations in clinical practice.

Consequences for clinical practice and research

For clinicians this means expanded opportunities to participate in translational research, access to educational programs on practice management and outcome improvement, as well as the need to implement standardized quality metrics, monitoring of complications and long-term patient follow-up — all of which contributes to increased predictability of treatment and sustainability of clinical practice. Recommendations for practicing dentists: actively engage with academic programs, participate in mentorship and applied research, implement digital tools for outcome assessment and ensure transparency of financial and research relationships.
